Dicran Hilajian

Dico, a registered U.S. patent attorney for over 25 years, with more than 40 years of technical experience, has a strong technical background in a variety of fields. Dico has broad experience in electronics, telecommunication, computer science, and mechanical and chemical arts offering multifaceted support and legal advice dealing with all aspects of intellectual property law including PCT practice, Patent Prosecution Highway, expedited practice and trademark law. Dico is detail oriented and works with clients from Fortune 500 companies to individuals dealing with complex issues and providing customized service tailored to maximize the value of clients’ intellectual property.

Dico received his J.D. with honors from Brooklyn Law School and also holds a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Polytechnic University with a course concentration in electromagnetic fields and waves. In addition, Dico has a chemical background as a chemistry major at the University at Albany.

Prior to establishing their law firm as a founding partner over 15 years ago, Dico practiced intellectual property law at prominent Long Island firms counseling a variety of clients and working with senior partners to provide superior service to address patent and trademark matters. Thereafter, Dico practiced intellectual property law at Philips for over 8 years, attaining a level of Senior Intellectual Property Counsel and representing a variety of divisions from telecommunication, display, consumer electronics, domestic appliances and lighting. He co-authored Patentee’s Participation in Standards Setting (The Rambus Case) of PIPA (Pacific Intellectual Property Association) Conference, 2003. Dico founded Thorne & Halajian, LLP with his partner in 2005, where he is intimately involved in all aspects of intellectual property law.

Prior to law school, Dico practiced over 14 years as an electrical engineer, including 11 years for Grumman Aerospace Corporation achieving a title of Senior Operations Analyst. During his engineering career, Dico gained significant expertise in the fields of RF/microwave/radar, digital signal processing and filtering, electronic countermeasures, computer modeling of radar systems, hardware and software modeling, program integration, and electromagnetic compatibility.

During his 40 year career, Dico developed significant expertise in many fields such as medical imaging and instrumentation including image guided therapy, diagnostic imaging, and related systems; electrochemical systems; artificial intelligence; computer hardware; software and networks; wired and wireless telecommunication, compression (e.g., TDMA, CDMA), and infrastructure; display technologies including rollable displays; video/audio transmission and encoding (e.g., MPEG); watermarking and encryption; imaging; recording; signal processing and filtering; data warehousing; memory including optical; optical and radar systems; consumer electronics including digital television systems; recommenders; digital video recorders; personal care and domestic appliances including coffee machines, shavers,  vacuum cleaners, ironing devices, cooking appliances and water purifiers; lighting components and systems, electronics, controllers, power supplies, ballasts and applications; antenna design and systems; semiconductor components, circuits and fabrications; Internet based systems; e-commerce and business methods; analog and digital electronics; electrical and mechanical arts.

Dico lives with his wife of 37 years, has 2 children and enjoys traveling, home improvement projects, gardening, swimming, fishing, skiing, tennis and Tai Chi.
